Researchers state that the revenue from RFID tags is projected
to increase from $300 million in 2004 to $2.8 billion by 2009
(In-Stat). Thousands of companies are following the lead of retail
giant Wal-Mart in mandating that their top suppliers are utilizing
this technology to save throughout their supply chain and
distribution network.
Though promising, there are still various issues with RFID tags.
These include security issues, legal issues involving privacy, cost
of tags, and the ability to scan tags. Prices range from 15 cents to
over $100 for a tag depending upon utilization and quantity.
Readers (tag scanners) still have problems with some tags based
on density of material and placement of tags.
RFID tags are not limited to the warehouse either. Tags can
help you track your product all the way to the cash register. They
can also be used to track and monitor other assets.
